Our goal at Chuo Gakuin University is to meet the educational needs of
capable and creative students. We would also like them to develop a sense of social responsibility while they are here, based on critical yet unbiased views of society. We believe the intensive, well-rounded approach we strive for at CGU helps them achieve these aims.
As the world of business is constantly and rapidly evolving, commercial education must not only keep abreast of current trends but cultivate students’ skills for an unknown future. It must also foster understanding of social change, especially as regards diversity in individual and cultural values. In accordance with this belief, we offer specially designed curricula in six specializations: Commerce, Business Administration, International Business, Accounting, Economics, Information Science.
Once a narrow field of specialized learning and practice for specialists, law has become an essential tool for people in many different fields. Reflecting this trend, our law faculty now offers five specializations: Jurisprudence, Public Administration, Business Law, Society and Law, Sports and Law.
Chuo Gakuin University has long taken a small class approach to education, as seen in the Pre-seminar course required of all freshmen. This course gives them an opportunity to master the skills necessary for the higher level assignments they will encounter later in their chosen specializations. These skills include research, writing term papers, and giving effective presentations. Students also acquire valuable communication skills through their collaborative work in the class and often develop lifelong friendships. A variety of events for outside the classroom are arranged, allowing a more relaxed interaction with the CGU faculty and staff. We believe the small class size of fifteen students and the balance of academic and informal interaction are key to helping students make a success of their four years at CGU.
Extracurricular activities are another important part of our students' campus life. We believe that a college education is incomplete without some form of
participation in activities outside the classroom. Our students have formed a number of organizations within our Association of Athletic Clubs, where they can pursue their athletic interests, including track and field games, judo, soccer, skiing, karate, golf, volleyball, baseball, and many other sports. In the Association of Culture Clubs, students can also participate in activities such as music, fine arts, Earth research, photography, computer science, tourism, and corporate accounting.
In April of 2000, Chuo Gakuin University established the Social Systems Research Institute on campus to conduct interdisciplinary research into the global trends that are having increasing impacts on our lives. The institute is the result of integrating the former General Science Institute, Comparative Culture Institute, and Organization for the Study of Local Autonomy. Integration of these approaches gives the new Social Systems Research Institute a unique perspective on the major issues now affecting society.
